Reverse: SIGNIS RECEPTIS above and below, S P Q R around, round shield inscribed CL V between legionary standard and aquila. RIC 87a; BMC 422; RSC 265a. Boldly struck in high relief, with lovely multi-hued toned. Superb Extremely Fine. Estimate Value $600 - 700
The reverse shows the clipeus virtutis, the shield of valor, decreed to Augustus by the Senate in 27 BC. Like the corona civica, it was awarded for saving the life of a fellow citizen.

Ganymede, a youth of renowned beauty, was the son of Tros, the eponymous founder of Troy. According to Homer, he was abducted by Zeus who had become besotted with him. Zeus took the form of an eagle and carried Ganymede to his home on Mt. Olympos, where he served as Zeus' cup-bearer and youthful lover (eromenos). The Latin name for Ganymede was Catamitus, from which the English word catamite is derived.
